Bajah + Dry Eye Crew To Play Chicago's World Music Festival
August 30 2010, posted by ExploreChicago.org
African superstars Bajah + The Dry Eye Crew have been packing stadiums in their native Sierra Leone since 2000, but took the global stage with the release of their first international album in 2009. The crew, comprised of Bajah, A-Klazz, and Dovy Dovy in the U.S. as well as the Jungle Leaders (Funky Fred, Dell, and Sly) back in Sierra Leone, are known not only for their unique sound, which blends hip-hop, dancehall, and reggae, but also their activism in giving the people of Sierra Leone a voice. The socially conscious group gets their name from the expression “dry eye,” meaning “bold,” an attribute the band exudes in both their musical sound and political activism.
World Music Festival Chicago, running September 21-30, is a city-wide, multi-venue, week-long festival showcasing both traditional and contemporary music from diverse cultures across the world. Tupac Shakur Listed as One of VH1's Greatest Musicians
August 27 2010, posted by Steven J. Horowitz, The Boom Box

Jay-Z, Biggie Make VH1's Greatest Musicians List
In 1998, when VH1 launched its first Greatest Musicians of All Time
list, there wasn't a single hip-hop musician that made the cut. The
music network just released an updated version of the list --
determined by a poll of music experts and well-known musicians -- with Jay-Z, Public Enemy, Notorious B.I.G., Tupac Shakur, Run-D.M.C., Eminem, N.W.A., Beastie Boys and Outkast all making the Top 100.
Though the list will be unveiled via a 4-night TV special premiering on
Monday, September 6 at 10PM, it's already making its rounds on the
Internet. The Beatles were ranked as the top Greatest Musicians of All
Time, while Bob Dylan came in at No. 2. Michael Jackson pulled behind
Dylan, followed by Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix,
Prince, Elvis Presley, James Brown and Stevie Wonder.
While R&B artists like Marvin Gaye and Aretha Franklin made the Top 30, Jay-Z is the first hip-hop act to chart on the list,
wedged at number 47 between the Ramones and Rage Against the Machine.
Public Enemy dropped at 54, while Notorious B.I.G. landed at 63, Tupac
Shakur placed at 69 and Run-D.M.C. ranked at 76.
Beyonce and Justin Timberlake were voted to 52 and 66, respectively, while Eminem sits at 79 in front of the Queen of Hip-Hop/Soul, Mary J. Blige. N.W.A showed up at 86, and Beastie Boys and Outkast nabbed 89 and 95. Alicia Keys rounded out the list at 100.
2Pac: The Musical-Tonight in LA!
August 25 2010, posted by Siran Babayan, LA Weekly
Wed., August 25, 8:00pm
Only the good rappers are dead. Biggie? Dead. Tupac? Dead. Vanilla Ice?
Still alive. We'll have to agree with Chris Rock, who once said that
"If you wanna get away with murder, all you gotta do is shoot someone
in the head and put a demo tape in their pocket." If you're a
conspiracy theorist, however, and believe that Shakur is lurking
somewhere out there with Elvis, Amelia Earhart and Jimmy Hoffa, you'll
be glad to see the rapper resurface in 2Pac: The Musical! Featuring such Tupac hits as "California Love," "Me Against the World,"
"Changes" and "Brenda's Got a Baby," the parody, written by Kevin
DeBacker and Evan Greenspoon, revolves around four characters
(DeBacker, Greenspoon, Corey Johnson and Laura Zeis) set in an Indiana
mall food court. And nothing tugs at Middle America's heartstrings like
a song about teenage pregnancy.

Joey Ramone Named One of Gibson.com’s Top 50 Frontmen
August 24 2010, posted by Gibson.com

Gibson.com’s Top 50 Frontmen (and Frontwomen) of All Time
One of rock and roll’s smartest scribes
once wrote, “It’s the singer not the song that makes the music move
along.” How true. The frontman or frontwoman is the figurehead for the
band, connecting the noise on stage with the crowds below. Whether it’s
the result of vocal greatness, a cool look, insane dancing ability or
just out-and-out charisma, the best frontmen enhance the music with
their performances (while sometimes turning their bandmates into the
“out of focus guys,” to quote Almost Famous). When you watch a great frontman, you simply can’t turn away. In tribute to these legendary performers, Gibson.com is
counting down the Top 50 Frontmen (and Frontwomen) of All Time – as
voted on by the Gibson editorial and writing staff, some all-star
musicians and most importantly, you, the readers. We’ve already
unveiled #50-#41. Check back each day this week, as we place 10 more frontmen on their pedestals every morning. And make sure you log on to Gibson.com on Friday, when the Top 10 Frontmen (and Frontwomen) of All Time are revealed! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 38. Joey Ramone (The Ramones) Jeffry Ross Hyman, known to the world as
Joey Ramone, was the least likely rock and roll frontman ever. The
tall, gangly, pimply Queens native didn’t have much of a vocal range,
but he did have a unique quality to his voice that betrayed the
vulnerability and earnestness that was at the heart of the punk
movement. Punk was born on teenage alienation, and Joey Ramone had that
in spades. Listen to a live version of “I Wanna Live” and you will
hear, behind the power chords, an empathizing voice of desperation. – Michael Wright Click HERE to see who else made the list.
Maggie Gyllenhaal to Star in Bill Monroe Biopic

Maggie Gyllenhaal Talks Hysteria and Bill Monroe Biopic
Maggie Gyllenhaal will be hitting theaters this weekend in the family friendly sequel Nanny McPhee Returns as a overworked single mother who needs help with her wild children. According to the actress, her next couple of projects won’t be suitable for young audiences because one will have to do with the invention of the vibrator (yep) and the other is a wild rock n roll romance. During the promotional junket for McPhee Gyllenhaal opened up about her roles in Hysteria and the developing Bill Monroe biopic...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Maggie] and her husband Peter Sarsgaard are both attached to a biopic based on music legend Bill Monroe and his tumultuous life.
Maggie Gyllenhaal: Bill Monroe, who invented Blue Grass music had a kind of Sid and Nancy style affair with this woman Bessie Lee Mauldin throughout his life and T-Bone Burnett’s going to do the music and Callie Khouri who wrote Thelma & Louise wrote the script so we’re going to do that together.
That sounds like Oscar magic waiting to happen! Talented lead actors, Burnett (the go to guy for anything country, bluesy, or vintage rock n’roll) and Khouri. That’s a match made in cinematic heaven.
